Union City is continuing its investment in community identity and neighborhood pride through a new placemaking initiative supported by the Georgia Municipal Association.

City leaders announced that Union City has been awarded a Georgia Economic Placemaking Grant in the amount of $2,000 through the Georgia Municipal Association to support the creation and installation of decorative pole banners throughout key corridors across the city.

The new banners are designed to create a stronger sense of place throughout Union City while helping residents and visitors instantly recognize when they are entering the city.

According to city officials, the banner designs will feature:

  • Union City landmarks
  • Seasonal and holiday themes
  • Community-focused branding
  • Elements connected to the city’s R3 initiative: Reclaim. Renew. Reimagine.

Leaders say the project is about more than aesthetics — it is about strengthening connection, visibility, and civic pride throughout Union City.

Mayor Vince Williams said the award reflects the importance of community recognition in one of Georgia’s fastest-growing cities. “The City Council and I are appreciative of this grant opportunity,” Mayor Williams said. “It displays how important city recognition is to our fast-growing home.”

City Manager Sonia Fillingame also emphasized the city’s continued focus on uplifting and investing in the community experience. “We deeply appreciate this award as it underscores our city’s commitment to uplifting our city,” Fillingame said.

The grant was awarded through a competitive application process and highlights Union City’s growing emphasis on placemaking — a strategy focused on creating vibrant, welcoming public spaces that strengthen community identity and encourage resident engagement.

City leaders say the project aligns with Union City’s broader vision of becoming a more connected, livable, and community-centered city while continuing to manage rapid growth and development throughout the region.

The banner initiative is expected to support:

  • stronger community engagement,
  • enhanced city branding,
  • neighborhood pride,
  • and continued beautification efforts throughout Union City.

Recognized as the fastest-growing city in Georgia and one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the nation, Union City has continued investing in parks, greenway trails, housing, infrastructure, and public spaces designed to improve quality of life for residents.

Officials say the new placemaking initiative is another step toward building a stronger sense of identity and belonging as Union City continues shaping its future under the city’s R3 vision:

Reclaim. Renew. Reimagine.
